Education

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. W.B. Yeats

The CDC is currently developing new programs in response to the needs of our Lower Cape residents. Current and potential homeowners will benefit from financial literacy classes, workshops on affordable housing lotteries and home foreclosure prevention. Professional and business development workshops (on topics like pricing, financial management, target marketing) will increase the small business owner’s skills in the work- and market- place.

Homebuyer Education Courses for First Time Homebuyers

The Lower Cape Cod CDC offers a Homebuyer Education course for first time buyers. These courses provide information on budgeting, looking for, selecting, and purchasing a home, and local resources that may be available to buyers.

The course consists of three, three-hour classes. Participants must attend all three classes to receive their certificates of completion. Successfully completing the course allows program participants to apply for first time homebuyer and soft 2nd mortgage products.

The Homebuyer Education Course has received the Massachusetts Homeownership “Collaborative Seal of Approval” from the Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA).

Classes are open to any interested individuals or households. A registration fee covers materials and refreshments.

Check our calendar for future classes, or, contact Chris Perry at 508-240-7873 ext. 22 or via email to be put on a list for future classes.

Lower Cape Housing Advocacy Roundtable

The Lower Cape Housing Advocacy Round Table (HART) supports the education of and discussion among residents, housing professionals, and housing advocates on the Lower Cape.

Round Table events are scheduled quarterly and are organized by a volunteer Steering Committee with support from the Lower Cape CDC. Topics vary according to local interests and needs, with the goal of increasing regional communication in order to refine existing and develop new strategies for affordable housing development, preservation, and management in each of the eight towns of the Lower Cape.

It is the CDC’s hope that by facilitating conversation among the different parties who all have a stake in the success of affordable housing on Cape Cod, we can promote a more collegial atmosphere and sharing of knowledge and resources. The CDC will use its large network of partnerships within the local community to market the meetings through radio programs, the CDC website and print materials.
